A Chat with Our Founder
To celebrate International Women’s Day Natasha Johnson of TWWW sat down with our Founder and Editor-In-Chief, Asia Carter, to chat with her about how TWWW came to exist, her style inspirations and her vision for celebrating stylish working women across the globe. Keep reading to deep dive into the conversation.
Happy International Women’s Day! I’m so pumped to have you here and to be able to have a conversation with the woman that started it all.
Happy International Women’s Day! Oh, stop. I’m honored to be here and to see women working everyday to make what started as a tiny idea into a reality.
First I want to know how you will be celebrating International Women’s Day.
Once I leave here I’ll be heading to volunteer at a women’s shelter. I really wanted this day to be about uplifting women at every stage in their life.
It seems you’ve made women the center of your life’s work. What is it about women that drives you to do all that you do?
Women are some of God’s most beautiful beings to me — both inside and out. The fact that we can be so caring and nurturing while carrying the world on our shoulders, how we always get it done - whatever it is, how we create life within us and then deliver it into this world… All of these things and so many more really push me to make sure that women are acknowledged and recognized for all that we contribute to society as a whole.
Do you think that acknowledgment and recognition is generally missing?
I don’t know if I would quite say missing, but I do believe that it’s not comparative to the impact women create. The wage gap is a good example of that. Nonetheless, society is getting better. We have a whole day to celebrate us! [chuckles]
Let’s talk about how TWWW came about.
Well, I’ve always had a passion for fashion. So cheesy, I know! [chuckles] But I truly always have. We all think we’re fashionable in high school, but I took it a step further and earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design and got a tattoo that says, “Passion for Fashion”. [laughs] Couple that with my passion for women, and TWWW was the perfect outlet.
How did you settle on professional women?
I think it came down to where I was in my life. I was working and surrounded by women who were working 40-plus hours a week, successful, living full lives and still managing to stay fashionable. I thought that was admirable and wanted to highlight that. They were all different types of professionals — corporate women and entrepreneurs alike.
Speaking of being fashionable, who would you say is your style icon or inspiration?
The cool thing about fashion to me is that it is ever-evolving. As my lifestyle and needs change, so do my style choices. I wouldn’t say I’m ever fully one type of dresser. My style has been Chanel-inspired at one point in my life, but also Moschino-inspired as well. Currently, I’d say I’m more along the lines of Max Mara or Thom Browne.
Any particular person who’s style influences yours right now?
I’d say Tracee Ellis Ross. I love that she experiments with different textures, silhouettes, color combinations and much more. All of her outfits are unique, but so her! It’s apparent that she loves solid colors, but isn’t afraid to take a risk with a print every now and then.
I love Tracee’s style too. Here at TWWW do you plan to do celebrity style or…?
It’ll be a combination of celebrity working women and everyday working women. Celebrities and everyday women alike draw their style inspiration from runways, red carpets, magazine covers and photo shoots. I want to be able to indentify trends and draw inspiration from all those things. I’d like TWWW to show how others have incorporated those trends and inspirations into their wardrobe and how other women can as well.
TWWW is based in the United States, will the blog be international?
Absolutely! We’re coming off of Fashion Month, and if that signifies anything, it’s that fashion is a universal language. Style is important to pretty much everyone everywhere. It’s how we present ourselves to the world.
That’s great to hear. I can’t wait to read about fashionable women on the other side of the globe! One last question, will you be making appearances on TWWW?
For now. [chuckles] While it sounds tempting to hop in front of the camera and have pretty pictures taken of yourself, I really want TWWW to focus on women other than myself. But, I understand that we are a small team right now, so I’ll need to step up and in front of the camera for the time being. My hope is to have this turn into one big community of fashionable working women uplifting and encouraging one another to keep on keepin’ on.
